Zero vs Hellcat

Despite its flaws I like the Zero, it's a handsome plane with character.

Actually, the Hellcat had comparable handling features to the Zero, and could climb with it as well as out dive it. Usually, Hellcats used Energy tactics, like diving on the enemy, firing and climbing out for another pass, which minimized the amount of turn fighting the Hellcat had to do. However, if the Hellcat was caught in a turn fight with a Zero, it was able to hold it's own. Also, you have it backwards, the Zero's cannon were in it's wings, the machine guns were in the cowling.

The 12.7mm had much faster firing cycles than the soundtrack used for this so called dog fight reenactment. It sounds more like a WW1 era aviation machine guns.

Probably thats why Zero pilots did not engage on a dogfight when right turning and diving.

@blownglasslide the hellcat could easily outperform a Zero in a dive
when diving the zeros aeilerons became very unresponsive when trying to roll in a dive, especially to the right.
the Americans found an intact zero in a bog in the aelutian islands and were able to test it in comparison with the hellcat.
so american fighter pilots learnt how to out dogfight the zero.
search Akutan zero in google to learn more

Most of the US veterans being interviewed for this program express sympathy for their opponents.
im pretty sure thats a fake smoke trail that most acrobatic planes use for a cool effect and this is stupid...just sayin

No actually it's real fire smoke, YOu know that in air-shows use real bullets. Actually the pilot was Japanese and was strafing to the american spectators. Thanks to the Hellcat pilot that shot him down no one got hurt but the Zero pilot who bailed out a couple of miles further....
