An 18-year-old Blue Springs High School student was killed Tuesday afternoon in a crash on Interstate 70.
The victim was identified as Garrett A. Clark, of Blue Springs.
Authorities said Clark was westbound on I-70 at Woods Chapel Road when his vehicle left the exit ramp, went airborne and struck a concrete pillar.
Officials said Clark was not wearing a seat belt.
Clark was a senior at Blue Springs High. Friends said he excelled as a student and as an athlete and he was also a successful debater.
KMBC's Dan Weinbaum reported that the mood was subdued at school Wednesday.
"It was sad. Everybody was really quiet," student David Ramlal said.
Clark played basketball and tennis. He had also received a full scholarship to the University of Kansas City-Missouri for speech and debate.
