In this business tv show, Bob Young, CEO and Founder of Lulu.com, talks about why he believes that business is people, and the people you have in your business will decide how well your projects run:
“The effort of recruiting the calibre of staff that you need for your project is without doubt the single most difficult thing that any entrepreneur business leader has in the course of their day, because business is people. At the end of the day the talent, the training, the motivation of your staff is the biggest determinant of your success.
There are no short cuts to that one other than doing a lot of hard work. You have to work closely with your staff to understand what motivates them; you have to interview a lot of people to find out who is both the most intelligent and the most interested in the field because like everyone else you tend to do the job better if you enjoy the job.
You know it’s a human nature thing. We tend to do more of what we like doing. So if you love playing golf you tend to become a better golfer because you play golf more. Well if you enjoy marketing and I hire you into a marketing position you’ll tend to be a better marketing person than if I talk to someone who should be an accountant into taking a marketing position. So there is no short cut, it’s just a lot of work.
The only way I know to keep staff properly motivated to come to work day after day, month after month, year after year, is to actually run a successful project. That is the one thing that keeps me up at night because I know that if the project that I am involved in does not move forward I can’t keep the smart people I have got and for that matter it is really hard recruiting smart people. Smart people can recognise a good opportunity from a bad one and if your business isn’t growing at all they are going to go well that’s a crappy opportunity.
If your business is growing like crazy and this is Google’s benefit right now, Google has this incredible growth rate going. They are trying to recruit ...

I hate to show my ignorance but I didn't know anything about Bob Young (have since googled and see he is a software entrepreneur - Red Hat/Lulu). Anyway the video shows he has a pretty logical and upbeat way of ensuring he has the best people in his team.....providing interesting projects for them to work on and appreciating that your business is actually what you staff make it.

I agree businessexpertsmatt, there is no fun in doing something you dislike. I am pretty sure that all of us can relate to your comment. I once worked 6 hours a day in a juice bar where there were about 6 customers a day. As you can imagine, I wasn't there long!!
