Billy Claiborne tried to kill Buckskin Frank Leslie because the Ringo crowd was sure that Leslie killed Ringo. Leslie survived it. Leslie was married to my Great great Aunt Mary Durwood who lived in Tombstone as Mary Killeen, then Mary Leslie (Ben Traywick calls her wrongly May Killeen). She died in Turlock, Ca in the 1940's. Also, I doubt that the small cottonwood tree was there at Ringo's grave 130 years ago. I've written a few articles about Tombstone, drove a stagecoach and tended bar there.

Back in those days...if you wanted to get rid of somebody it was much easier, not saying I would do it, but somebody killed Johnny Ringo...I find it hard to believe he killed himself!

The pistols in those days were black powder.Ringo could not have held the pistol far enough away from his head to prevent powder burns on his head.There were no powder burns on his skin.

Ringo's rifle was propped against the tree with an unfired round in the chamber. His revolver was found in his hand, containing 5 live rounds and an empty chamber under the hammer. Johnny Ringo did not commit suicide. Johnny-Behind-the-Deuce, a gambler with a hatred and grudge against Ringo for trying to lynch him is the most likely suspect. Outlaw Pony Deal killed JBtheDeuce a short time later in revenge. Billy Claiborn claimed Frank Leslie killed Ringo with his dying breath. this per Ray Hogan
