  • Not very helpful washed quilt so I could give as baby gift. After tying all those surgeons knots , I had to retie the whole quilt they all opened. I found out why they are called a surgeons knot so they can be easly opened or fall out on their own. Sad had my gift done and baby has arrived many hours spent trying to retie.

  • Yikes, I'm so sorry you had a bad experience. I have been doing this for years (and washing quilts) with no problems. I wonder what happened!

  • This is not a surgeons knot

  • Your words don't match your actions. Are your words correct so that it is "right over left" and then "left over right" like a square knot, or are your actions correct so you take the left one over and then the left one over again??!? (I'm fixing to make my first quilt...)

  • how do u get the yard easily thru the needle and then thru the fabric layers.

  • u have such a pretty voice

  • what kind of thread do you use for this?

  • I watched your video with a UFO baby quilt in hand, then tied the quilt in under 30 minutes. I ran it through a regular wash/dry cycle and it came out just fine - no knots were loose or untied - thank you for the lesson :)

  • @mdhaworth Thanks for the reply. I have since went to my local quilt shop and talked with instructors and they all use a square knot a surgeons knot should be never used they told me. The square knot dates way back when

quilting started so got some history and I am looking at a few class also. So I used the square knot to fix my baby gift and washed it again so it would be fresh. No knots fell out this time. No intention to upset you. Just upset hard work had failed and had to retie the quilt.

  • Thank you:)

  • Tying is a quick way to hold all 3 layers of the quilt "sandwich" together, otherwise the batting will shift causing lumps inside the quilt.
