  • Faust, Achilles ... this is a re-telling of one of the oldest tales: he who wants it all risks losing it all. "What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world but loses his soul?" He made a mockery of God (in his wife's eyes), and he fell hard ... but the one pure thing in his life was his love for her, and her love for him. At the end he became like the man he mistakenly poisoned. A tragic tale. I recalled seeing this as a kid, over 30 years ago and it left a deep impression on me.

  • Great morality movie, which you rarely see these days. The ditsy little girl of fluff you dismiss turns out to be the strongest character due to her strong moral center.Tyrone was great and courageous for tackling this unusual against type role. Wish the psychologist could have received her comeuppance. Thanks for posting.

  • @mvies77Agree. A redeeming quality is part of morality play/tragedy, but redemption is there for the audience, not necessarily for the characters. He is saved at the end by someone with a strong moral center. Some people wrote they`ve once seen NA with a bleak final without any trace of happy end. Wonder if its true and film rolls are hidden somewhere or if they just imagined it like people imagined "rosemary´s baby",or if its just an internet age myth. Anyway, T.P.showed lots of courage.

  • @SatchmoSings She obviously never saw a horror movie then lol

  • @SatchmoSings I do not think wanting redemption is particularly American or any other country since I do not think any one person can speak for the entire population of a nation. I do think that most people want their hero or main character to have some redeeming quality or in the general pattern of a story they will be a villain if too negative a personality. So, thus, you are right. Tyrone was too much a clean hero to be accepted in this role. That is why I feel he was very courageous to try.

  • @DanTDrac You'll notice he never blinks when he's looking at the carny boss; he probably got a "blink in" when he lowered his head.

  • @mvies77 You made a good point there; what happened to the psychologist?

Anyway, Americans love films like this where there is final redemption but this one didn't do that well at the box; I guess it was just a little too much to see a big star like Power in such a mess.

  • speechless!

  • The new Zenna and Pete?

  • Great movie, Great subject, Great Tyrone Power!
