Brief Encounter is a classic romantic drama set in 1945 during WWII in and around the fictional Milford railway station. A married woman, with children, Laura (Celia Johnson), meets a stranger, a doctor (Trevor Howard) named Alec in the station's waiting/tea room, who kindly removes a piece of grit from her eye then leaves to catch his train. During her following shopping trips to Milford, Laura bumps into Alec and a friendship begins to develop. Soon the meetings become a fixed arrangement.

  • Part 2 (of 3): So I wonder where and from whom that thought came in for Noel Coward, and how he might have thought the stories were connected -- e.g., is he arguing against Winter's premise that coup de foudre must be honoured/respectability be damned?

  • @ jdollinter: I wondered abt that too once I read that Johnson was a crossword fanatic.

But the $64,000 question is what made Noel insist on having the music in the picture be almost exclusively the Rach 2? Back in '38 his friend Raymond Massey directed and starred in Keith Winter's "The Shining Hour" -- in which, incidentally, Cyril Raymond also played the cuckolded husband. The Rach 2 was featured as a leitmotiv for the romance between Massey's and Gladys Cooper's characters.

    So I wonder w
