Gambit was a 4 month old degu who had a very hard, short life. We adopted him on August 29, 2009 when we saw him curled up in the corner of a pet store cage nearly dead. He was mostly bald, his tail was bleeding and ready to fall off, his ears were shredded with holes all over them, his teeth were white (degus should never have white teeth), his front paws were broken, his jaw was twisted and he was just laying there unable to move. We quickly told the staff that he was in pain; they told us theyd take him in back. We knew they were going to kill him and took him home on the spot.
We spent the next two weeks taking care of him. Most of his fur grew back and we taught him how to use his paws. He even managed to heal his tail so it would not fall off. He learnt his name and even got excited when we put on X-Men cartoons, he would squeak at the TV whenever someone said his name. He enjoyed sitting on peoples heads and getting his belly scratched. He also loved playing with our 3 other male degus whom quickly took him in as one of their own.
The morning of September 16, 2009 started out like any normal weekday morning. We let the degus out to play in the living room like we do every day, girls first and then the boys. Gambit was just as happy as ever, spending most of his time out sitting on my boyfriends head. We then put them back in their cage and I headed off to class for the day. I got home later that afternoon around 4 and Gambit was looking a little weak, which was not really a surprise. Since his jaw was twisted he sometimes found it hard to eat. So we put him in a separate part of the cage with all of his favorite foods so he wouldnt have to worry about the other boys taking it from him. Since this had happened before we felt ok with leaving him for a few hours as we went out to see my parents. We got home around 8 and Gambit was doing no better, he hadnt eaten. We took him out of the cage and held him. We set up a pillow for him (thats where the last picture in the video was taken). He couldnt stand up, he couldnt move. We made sure he got some water. He died the evening of September 16 shortly after 10 curled up in my boyfriends hands. The damage he received in that pet store finally finished him. Please help stop this from happening to another innocent animal.
Rest in peace Gambit, we love you and miss you so much.

Degus are part of the chinchilla family. They're very social animals and sort of look like big gerbils.

Thank you. He was doing so well that morning and then just all of a sudden he was gone. We had a funeral for him at my parents' place and buried him under the fruit trees since he loved it so much when ever my mom would bring him fruit stick to chew on. At least he's not in pain anymore.

That's an absolutely terrible story! =( I can't understand how some people can be so heartless to see animals in pain and do nothing about it. He had a terrible beginning to his life, but I'm sure he wouldn't have waned to go any other way. =) What you did was extremely nice and you can rest assured that he died loving life and loving you even more!

Thank you. It's nice to know that he's no longer in pain but it still hurts knowing that he's gone.
