on the 4 highest strings, there is another set that accomponies it, much like a 12 string; with the 2 highest strings with pairs that are tuned the same, and with the next 2 highest strings having strings with it that are an octave higher. The a and low e (5th and 6th) strings are alone and don't have pairs. Though I don't know the exact reason, I think it is better than a 12-string for metal distortion, while having the 12-string sound or something like that. I hope this answered your question.
