i used a regular fire place with beach wood and a roasting stick to cook a hot dog...

Nothing like a dog's ass and a vigorously wagging tail three inches from the meal to tempt you!

We love watching you cook, Eric.

Love the honesty! That is really helpful when learning to hone a technique.

YOur BIG mistake was cooking anything with carbs (breads or sugared recipes) directly in the d.o.. put a metal trivet in the bottom of the d.o. & food in a pan on top the trivet. I know this because Grandma was a genuine pioneer (born 1880) & immigrated from Utah to Arizona in 1896 driving the cattle with her family (dairy farmers). She knew everything there is about cooking the old way, including really delicate cakes and pies out fishing with just fire wood, d.o. & a hole in the ground.

We have 3 different size dutch ovens, campfire style. My better half calls the biggest her 'magic pot'. Thanks for the vid.

Butter Burns ..mix shortening in the other stuff..

There's an old saying "Butter Burns" you may have to add butter later but shortening may be put in the mix evenly and distribute protection from too much heat and add flavor....

thank you ! enjoyed your vid and you made me smile. not easy to do. i grew up where every one cooked using wood burning stoves. it's an art, not a science. more, please!

I have always wanted to learn how to cook using a fireplace wish there was a cookbook on it ,,,I think there are fireplace tools one can get that is helpfull when cooking,,,like a fireplace crane to hang a pot or kettle ,,,but I have no Idea where to even get one,,,but cooking in a fireplace and tryin different recipes I would like to learn how,,I have a non alcholic wassil recipe thats really good I bet it would be great cooking it in a fireplace!
Good try! Just keep trying at it until you get it right- cakes and cobblers, etc, are hard to do even in a dutch oven with an inverted lid. I would get an inverted one, and keep it well away from any actual flame. You only want a few coals on the bottom and less on the top- however many inches around the oven is, you use twice the coals to get up to 375º F- after that, one coal adds about 20º F. :)

well a cake or cobler is the hardest thing to cook in a dutch oven, if you do decide to cook one you must have a dutch oven that has coals on the top. do not load up the top with coals and put few coals on the bottom. a note of advice, you can always cook it more if the coals are not hot enough. but if the coals were too hot well, you have a mess. i don't know if you can cook a cobler with the pot that you have, it is difficult even with coals on top dutch oven. try it again with less heat
