Nadat een kleine onschuldige leugen over het verliezen van haar maagdelijkheid uitlekt, begint het leven van Olive Phendergast (Emma Stone) opvallende overeenkomsten te vertonen met het leven van Hester Prynne in het boek "De Rode Letter" , welke ze momenteel aan het lezen zijn op school. In het boek wordt Hester na het plegen van overspel veroordeeld tot het dragen van een bloedrode letter A (van Adulteress -- Overspelige) op haar kleding, die haar zonde publiekelijk zichtbaar maakt. Olive besluit de roddels te gebruiken om haar sociale leven en financiële situatie een boost te geven en naait demonstratief de letter "A" op haar kleding.
