Who ever said that show business types were greedy, selfish and ungrateful? Since you, the viewer, turned a last-place industry joke into the number 1 network, the stars decide to show their gratitude. All I can say is: you're welcome. Ironically, despite the #1 status of the Network with the Bird of Colors, its Raleigh-Durham market affiliate was usually dead last in local ratings. Maybe all those arbitrary preemptions had something to do with it?
The 1986 NBC promo starts with NEWARK, NJ-born KeSHIA KNIGHT PULLiam, RUDY HuxTABLE from “The Cosby Show”. Advancing to Jason Bateman and BETty Thomas could evoke “mate bait”; NEWARK mayor Cory “skipping E” Booker; secret wager games; and perhaps the stone cult. No “Knight Rider” stars, since the show had just been cancelled, but Peter Parros was on the final 1985-86 season and married Jerri Morgan on the 13th b’day of NBA player Grant Henry Hill: OCT. 5, 1985. I watched lots of TV from the era, but never “Hill Street Blues”, so I had no idea who Taurean Blacque (b. 5/10/41) was as he wraps up the gratitude in this 1980s NBC promo. My first thought: “Who is this wannabe thug who didn’t bother to take the toothpick out of his mouth?” Blacque’s birth in NEWARK, NJ (b. 5/10/41) bookends the promo celebs perfectly since it opened with Keshia Knight Pulliam, RUDY HUXtable, from “The COSBY Show” also being born in NEWARK.
