  • Actually I don't like the song either but being so rude to people is hardly going to engender a flowing comment stream is it? Please don't bother to respond if you are going to fly off the handle and act like a prima donna because we dare to have an opinion.

  • @charliemyboy100

The question is: Why bother to make that sort of comment on my video when there are other versions of that song on YT? Why bother to make a negative comment at all? I spent hours assembling and editing this piece of film. And I happen to like the song, obviously.

  • This must be one of the only few Petula Clark songs I really don't like!!!

What accent does she think she's doing in the first verse? LOL....

  • @davie12

It's called a fake upper-class British accent à la Edna Mae Oliver. This is considered humorous because it is sandwiched between "You've got to remain" which is an odd mixture of colloquial American English ("you've got to") and a fancier word ("remain") that no American would use, and another American expression "Oh, what a break for me". Petula was once known, as a child comedian, as "Radio's Little Mimic". Obviously, her talent is lost on some people.

  • @baracine Well, I'm sorry to leave what you implied to be "negative feedback". I'm a HUGE fan of Petula Clark. I even learned French so I could understand her French material and followed her all over the world. That is NOT a fake upper class accent. I'm British and it's nothing like that, and Petula is a brilliant mimic, she could do one if she wanted.

Out of all her songs this is the one I can't abide....well, this and and Popa Picolino

  • @davie12

I got it the first time: You don't like this song. Is there anything else you want to do, like burn down the YouTube building or throw a tamper tantrum? Who is it that said: "As useless as trying to explain a joke to someone who will not laugh"?

  • A slightly edited version of this was issued in the U.S. on a "bargain label" LP ("The English Sound") in 1967.

  • what a lovely song, it seems so free, diverse and liberal! not a hit but a great song to listen while shopping at a British store
