The city of London has a parakeets problems. They have invaded the city and have been displacing, attacking and outbreeding the local birds.

La ville de Londres à un problème de perruches. Elles ont envahi la ville et s'attaquent aux oiseaux locaux et se reproduisent plus rapidement qu'eux.

here's an excerpt of an article published in the Independent entitled "Invasion of the parakeets":

"The brilliant green parakeets have hitherto been a popular sight in the parks and gardens where they are to be found, squabbling and dashing from tree to tree, in a broad swath of south London from Croydon in the east to Esher and beyond in the west. But since they first began breeding in the wild more than 40 years ago, their numbers have built up to a point where now some ecologists fear their population is exploding, with potentially damaging results. It is feared that the parakeets, which nest in holes and crevices in trees, may be displacing British tree-nesting species such as woodpeckers, nuthatches and starlings.

There is as yet no hard evidence that this is taking place, says the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). But as a precaution the society has asked the Government to investigate the risk from the parakeets under its recently launched strategy for dealing with invasive non-native species."

  • they're actually quite delish. very mild in flavour.

  • I've seen tropical birds in New York's Central Park for years. CP is a major US birding place, on several flyways. A red and green parrots showed up on my windowsill, but flew away and tried to cozy up to some pigeons on a street light. They freaked and moved away. Perhaps s/he ended up in large nest of red and green parrots on a pylon of the Brooklyn Bridge. According to a birder friend if it gets cold slowly, they acclimate. In April a snowy egret behind yellow forsythia by the pond.

  • They're in Brussels, too.

  • Londoners should count themselves lucky a beautiful tropical bird has deigned to colonize their bloodstained, ugly city.In my own country, the native species has disappeared. Wonder what these parakeets do to survive the awful weather!
