Charlie Sloth has been on a road-trip....to find the hottest rappers up north and understand why rap music in the U.K is dominated by the London scene. He's travelled from Newcastle to Liverpool, Manchester to Sheffield, Huddersfield to Leeds - spent time in boxing gyms with aspiring MC's, and met feared battle-rappers working the night-shift in Morrisons. From rap to grime to bassline to house; this is the story of the MC scene in the north of england right now.

It's Grime Up North is available to watch and hear across 1Xtra and 1Xtra online from 9pm on Sunday 18th December 2011; and if for any reason you miss it, you'll be able to watch it on your TV via the Red Button at 10pm the same night.

@jimmyhayers yeah i know i didnt say academic success is a measure of success. my cousin got 3 a*s at a level but is probably one of the most naive, ignorant person i know with zero common sense. all im saying is that young people like this usually mock people for being nerds and writing poetry and wanting to sound intellectual but ironically also express themselves in this way.

does anyone else find it interesting that people like shotty and other rappers are "hard", brought up in estates, reject education and so on and yet their form of expressing themselves is poetry, like which is usually associated with intellectualism and yet its not "cool" or "urban" to be seen as an intellecutal. . i dunno y but i just find that interesting.
