  • The Countess Darlington, my 8th great-grandmother, was NOT George I's mistress but his half-sister, a known secret in Hanover that was not generally known in Britain when George Louis and his entourage, which included Charlotte Sophia von Platen-Hallermund, arrived from Germany. The rumor that she was his mistress started because the British courtiers puzzled over why George and this lady were so close and affectionate to each other.

  • George the First always chose large, ugly women as his mistresses. There was this lady, later the Countess of Darlington, and another, both equally vast.  The London mob named them after a working-class district of South London, 'The Elephant and Castle'
