Woodturning: hook tool end grain hollowing

using the 3/8" hook tool to cut end grain silver maple. leaves a finish that hardly needs sanding.

End grain bowls will crack without intensive special treatment. Looks nice and easy on the video but is trowing away your time by self digging.

Not sure what you mean by self-digging. This piece got no special treatment, and turned out great. I will say that turnings which include the pith DO have a much higher tendency to crack. The relative humidity in my area just makes me lucky because it dried slowly enough not to crack.

Still amazes me the lengths that some will go to, to avoid learning how to use a bowl gouge. Take a class!!!!

There are lots of great sites that show how to make one yourself, or you can also check out tools like the "termite" for sale commercially. The termite is a full ring cutter but works essentially the same way, with the same basic applications.

The hook tool is a woodturning tool made from 3/8" round bar stock that is especially effective in open-form end grain hollowing. It excels in this function because the unique hook shape allows the turner to rub the bevel on the inside-to-outside PULL CUT, just as you would a bowl gouge in face-grain hollowing with a rim-to-center PUSH CUT.

excellent video. where could u buy one of these tools? I know grizzly machine sells a somewhat similar tool or used to but I heard bad things about those tools.
