This compelling new documentary focuses on the sexual dilemmas and difficult life choices young girls face as they come of age in contemporary American culture. Challenging long-held myths about girlhood, the film draws on the insights of girls themselves to explore and shed light on their actual lived experience as they navigate our increasingly hyper-sexualized society. The voices of a diverse range of girls are supplemented with accessible analysis from leading experts on girls and sexuality, including Lynn Phillips, author of Flirting with Danger; Joan Jacobs Brumberg, Director of the Body Project; and Deborah Tolman, author of Dilemmas of Desire.

Produced and Directed by Susan Macmillan.

  • What you're aying sounds like a great fairy tale, but in reality girls DO face a lot of contradicting pressure, both to be "sexy" and "sexual" and to be "pure" and "virginal". That constant tension in the collective psyche between the Saint and the Whore puts a lot of pressure...and can take you places where you don't want to be... Date rape anyone?

  • I'm european. Over here sexuality is not scary :) it can be done overcome the taboo and start the dialogue TV is a bad babysitter

  • thanks for the video. a lot of assholes misconstrued the message of this video. you can not just tell kids "don't have sex because i said so". that does not and will not ever work. sexual education is one of the tools you equip your children with.

  • @losersalwayswin wooord up im thinkin the same thing

  • Oh, and why is it that when a girl DECIDES to have sex with a guy she's a victim? If she regrets it, that's her fault. I wish people took more responsibility for their actions...

  • I love how there's no talk about even encouraging abstinence... just because it's an uphill battle doesn't mean it's reasonable to forget all about it, like "oh shit, the kids are going to fuck anyway, let's throw condoms at them." "Teach them about being sexually active and being safe." FUCK YOU. Children should be told not to have sex, fuck.

  • I agree that having sex with young boys is wrong, but it was the Spartans who trained young boys to be warriors and the Athenians who had sex with them. Completely different cultures. A Spartan who had sex with a young boy would have been killed.

  • I think every generation of females had the same problem if not similar(think when the miniskirt came out)Girls are becoming sluts, not girls anymore. And what's worse is that some guys are actually promoting it by saying bullshit like"I love it when you wear this, dye your hair that"etc. Some guy said if I want to dye my hair I should do it blonde.I'm like,no way am I doing that!I love my natural hair color.

  • girls are brainwashed to bascially become sluts. they will feel left out if they don't have sex by a certain age, dress a certain way, shag around etc etc. but the thing is, guys dont wanna settle down with girls like that.

girls - be girls. guys like that.

  • I am so tired of hearing the " the greeks molested kids so it must be ok " excuse. Just because something is common practice doesn't mean it's not damaging greeks also sent some young boys at the age of 5 to be warriors do you advocate that ? No!The greek culture was very violent especially the young men..perhaps as a reation to being violated on a regular basis. Sex is not evil but sex comes with responsibilities and young people are not ready for them especially when adults are included!

  • 477, are you saying woman/girls are not able to form their own judgments or are more easily brainwashed by the liberal media, wow you are sexist.

  • thanks krissy, was almost shocked to see a bit of truth on YouTube
