Cuban guitarist Leo Brouwer plays his transcriptions of 12 keyboard sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti in a magnificent (and long out-of-print) 1974 recording.

Sonata in E minor K. 19/ L. 383 (1738) (transposed from F minor)

To hear the whole set uninterrupted, go to

Brouwer's notes (from the original LP) can be found in the information box for videos 1-4 of this series.

***
For this recording, Brouwer played a guitar built in 1973 by Daniel Friedrich (Paris).

Recording: D. Scarlatti. Douze sonates par Leo Brouwer. Erato: Florilège de la guitare 17 (1974) STU70786

Score: 12 sonatas/Domenico Scarlatti; transcribed for guitar by Leo Brouwer. Gendai Guitar Co. 1983, repr. 2004.

Please don't ask for the score -- I don't have it. It can be found at Gendai Guitar (Japan) or at Guitar Solo Publications (San Francisco, CA); both are on the internet.

  • I added here as a video response a good transcription of the sonata K 466 , in Fa minor, adapted and played by the Duo Assad. ( if you permit )

  • Certainly! It's an interesting adaptation and beautifully interpreted. Thanks very much!

  • veenoide,

Here it is, at last. I hope it was worth the wait!

  • Thank You x 1000 for the uploads!

  • Can't thank you enough for these uploads of Brouwer's amazing transcriptions of Scarlatti's masterworks. I had this on cassette from a very scratchy record that I borrowed in the 70's...so nice to hear a clean recording of these works. The disc is long out of print BTW. Gracias!

  • amazing, his interpretation, arpeggios, the subtle swift legato, perfect syncopation, it might not be his original work but its still amazing, especially to transcribe this from the piano.

  • Thanks. I didn`t know about all these transcriptions and performance of D. Scarlatti by Leo Brower. Very very interesting.

    D. Scarlatti is one of the composers whose adaptations sound very well in the guitar( as J S Bach, for ex. ). Because not all composers in transcription gets good in the guitar.

  • I believe this piece to be One of the best scarlatti pieces translated for guitar and brillantly played by Leo Brouwer!
