The "Chip in $10" Challenge is a way for Escambia County, Fla. residents to help your neighbors who are experiencing sudden financial hardship as a result of the economic downturn. Do you know someone who has lost their job, had their hours cut, experienced other reduction in income, or has received a foreclosure notice? There is a growing number of people who have never needed help before but suddenly are having difficulty providing shelter for their family, putting food on the table, or keeping the lights on. As a community we can help our neighbors before their situation reaches a crisis level. Currently in Escambia County, 9.1 percent of our residents are out of work (higher than the state and national average), home foreclosures are up 54 percent over last year, and more than 20,000 families are receiving food stamps (an increase of 20 percent over last year). Additionally, local agencies are reporting an increase in domestic violence and child abuse cases, which often are linked to family financial problems.
