i havent unboxed mine yet ....question on the green tanks for it ...can they be stored in the garge in the winter?

So I drilled a hole in my bathroom floor and ran a 12' hose to a 20 lb tank in our very drafty basement.
I guess my first question is "am I gonna die"?
Second, how bad would it be if I left the tank open (hoses connected) instead of turning it off after use?
