Live @ Tainted Blue is an episodic web series documenting life in a state of the art recording studio in Times Square, New York City. The series features audio technology and music production quick tips from the Tainted Blue team, music performances as well as lifestyle and cultural segments that give you insight into the contemporary music industry community.

In this episode of Live @ Tainted Blue, Studio Manager Sax receives a last minute call to book a recording session for a local, three piece NYC band called Ladybug Stingray. Their first task before the band arrives is to setup and mic the drum kit. Sax, Matthew and the rest of the team tackle microphone choice, placement and signal flow to ensure a consistent recording. Learn what microphone's the team decides on, how they're used and how Ableton Live is routed and used during the recording process.

  • Where are these students from? How did u pick them?

  • @IsraelDrummer4 Hi, thanks for watching! The students were part of an apprenticeship program called Recording Connection in collaboration with Tainted Blue Studio as well as a network of recording studio across the US. A quick google search will turn up their site if your interested or you can get in touch with Tainted Blue to ask about open spots if your in NYC.

  • who mics a snare like that?

  • @benc1891 Hey thanks for the feedback. There is not right or wrong way to mic a snare drum, this is just one of many possible ways. Let us know if you have any more questions or microphone techniques!

  • Thanks for all the great feedback! Spread the word, and stay tunned.

  • Blue and SM57s.

  • Unfortunately, I could tell the setup guys were zoning out when the anal guy at 0:50 - 1:22 was doing a really good job describing the concepts used in mic placement. The dreads dude in particular. Doers are usually not good concept followers. You need a group of Concept Followers to grok what the Concept Follower is saying so that time/effort/money/emotion is not wasted on people not mentally equipped to understand. Interesting vid.
