  • One of the most beautifully played movements of Dvorak`s amazing masterpiece- one of my favourite symphonies performed magnificiently by one of my very favourite conductors. And this is the older recording with his Cleveland Orchestra. What a pleasure. Thank you. It warms my heart.

  • @frayedtip YOUR TEACHER!??!! AWESOME!!!

  • @chplindave I don't quite agree. Marc Lifschey was an excellent oboist, and definitely one of THE best i've ever heard. has a very nice tone, but i do think that John Mack had a fuller tone. However, Lifschey had a nice ring and sweetness in his tone that Mack never had... so both are great!

  • No one has sounded quite as nice as Marc on principal oboe since the unfortunate day he left Cleveland. Fine oboists have come and gone, but no one has brought the ability to lift an audience from their seats the way he did.

  • I cannot imagine another orchestra and director combination performing this beautiful piece any better.

  • Sublime ! I particularly love the way Szell plays silences : a pure (and yet rare) marvel ! Thanks shellac for posting this masterpiece.

  • Szell is amazing. Every section sounds like one instrument. The perfection is in-your-face.

I lived in Cleveland for about 5 years. I was introduced to the Cleveland Orchestra by a friend who was apoplectic that Eugene Ormandy was getting so much great press. My friend put on the Philadelphia Philharmonic and then the same piece by Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra. There was no comparison. He did that over and over. I was convinced.

    I still am.

  • Fantastic!! My teacher, Marc Lifshey, sounds fantastic on Principal oboe.

  • It's a shame no one has rated/commented on such a wonderful performance. Allow me to be the first.
