Japanese Shinkansen "bullet train" speeds past Odawara station towards Tokyo. This is on the Tokaido Shinkansen line that runs between Tokyo and Kyoto/Osaka. It seemed to go by faster in person than in the video; perhaps that's because the camera has a wide angle lens which makes objects appear farther away than they really are.

  • Gotta agree with you ddell2 They do seem much faster in person, and remember they slow down for the station a bit. I thought they were 16 car trains but I think I counted 20 in your video.

  • Do they slow down through the stations? I didn't feel it when on board -- maybe it was gradual slowing. Aside from when we passed a train in the other direction, I didn't feel the speed as much as when seeing them pass as I stood on the platform.

The bullet trains speed is well known -- what really impressed me was the punctuality and frequency of the trains. There's only one track in each direction except at stations yet they follow one another only a few minutes apart. That's amazing.

  • @alantrains: There's only 16 cars (including both ends). It was hard to count them in this video so I went back and viewed the original video frame by frame and counted the cars.

  • thats a long train

  • @growingup15: It is long -- it's a busy route and I think these trains are all the same length -- or maybe a shorter length for off hours. Anyway, they can't be longer than the platforms all along the line and I remember seeing "maps" of the trains showing which cars had restrooms, snack bars, etc.

  • are you sure thats full speed?

  • The punctuality and frequency of all the Japanese trains was amazing. On some of the single track lines I traveled on, the meets at passing loops was timed perfectly 99% of the time. You could see the opposing train entering the other end of the loop as we entered our end.
