Ended up being a bad timing belt idler pulley. The bearing eventually exploded causing the belt to jump and damage to various parts. Luckily there weren't any piston-valve collisions.

it's a 99 DOHC...it is an interference engine. The belt did jump time a few notches, but not enough to cause any damage thankfully.

e glad that subaru uses non interference engines.
they should never make contact.
