My first catch of the lady ('YL' in radio geek speak) version of an E25 broadcast. Pretty much full broadcast (minus the repeat reading).

Recorded at 9450 khz. Signal fairly good for the UK. Good time to catch this would be 1200-1300 some Saturdays.

E25 is the name given by the ENIGMA 2000 monitoring group to this curious (occasionally comical) numbers station, which is believed to originate from Egypt or a nearby country.

Broadcasts are largely in English, with an interesting pronounciation of numbers, in four-figure groups.

In this broadcast, callup is '275'. I am unsure whether the voice is live or automated. There are some rather fascinating elements. Firstly, even though the signal is strong, the phonetics make it hard to distinguish certain numbers, especially 2 and 4.

Repeat is pronounced 'rebeat' - apparently an indication of a native Arabic speaker.

Also, I cropped the video just after 'rebeat, rebeat, rebeat' to go right to the end - a rather garbled 'end of message, end of transmission.' And *afterwards* you can hear another '2'! Is this a mistake? Does this show the broadcast is automated (badly)?

Incidentally, there were further broadcasts about 45 minutes later which I didn't record.

  • Taliban code, prolly. Clandestine activity, just above 7415.

  • AFAIK, no insurgent group has been shown to use numbers stations. While a mobile transmitter is feasible, most stations (like the one above) are clear and audible throughout a continent, and so would probably require a powerful transmitter hosted on 'home' territory.

  • Ah it was a guess. I don't talk to insurgents that often anyway, so I can't say. The late Harry Helms used to write about this stuff. From what I remember, he said consulates and embassies used to use this type of communications. I knew some 9J2 guys that were into amateur radio when I lived down there (I was 9J2RF), and they were pretty active. Interesting all the same. Makes ya wonder.

  • I can just imagine the spy operator sitting in a cold field with his radio beating his head against a rock in frustration at not being able to copy this crap. LOL

  • @onelasssttime She sounds as if she is having an orgasm :D

  • Really weird...

  • Heard E25 today. ID was 780 and the "7" in the first shout was missing. But after EOT i heard a single "7" before shutdown. Maybe it was the first missing 7?

  • I have tried a month or so to get this one! I guess i am to far away. Nice video!

  • She sounds in pain..;-/
