That tone could come not only from his signature pickup arrangement, but the scalloped frets...Malmsteen, Ritchie Blackmore and Steve Vai (on occasion) used scalloped fret guitars and it results in a much more isolated sounding and cleaner note when struck.

is it easier or more difficult to play when the frets are scalloped like that? very nice playing btw

Well,it's pretty much the same...However with a scalloped fretboard you get better grip on the strings(and so easier bents and vibrato) but lose speed in the high register.
