@mannerzdeejay confined water only. of course, if you agree to make it more challenging with the instructor, that's up to you and the instructor! It is not about doing a skill, but rather thinking through a potentially novel situation and solving it. every instructor and student does it slightly differently. e.g. my prescription mask was swapped last, integrated weights vs belt, and our fin+BCD sizes are VERY different so we had to adapt to make sure it was all secure. we then did a short swim.
I have never seen any instructor actually do anything like that. Not only is he without kit (not leading by example), but he is not letting them learn to do it first with proper buoyancy control, and then later adding the special stress-sauce with physical restraints.
The PADI guidelines state that the instructor is NOT to invent problems for this skill or to interfere. Instructor just comes across as a bullying show off.
@Sargethepyromaniac probably, but as i said,i dont personally like the way the instructor has handled this and much rather the way i had to do it,which i scored low on any way as the other person i done it with freaked out.
@GRolla101 As an instructor, i'm sure he knows what he's doing, + the cameraman has full scuba gear, as well as a pair of divers in the background practicing skills,
@Sargethepyromaniac i understand that the instructor is doing it as a way to stress them out,but for him to not be in scuba kit either,to be wasting their air and to be inflating their BCD's etc.it isnt very safe.also, the only people in shot with their gear on are the 2 buddy breathing.meaning that if he keeps inflating their BCD's they wont have a back up at all.i personally dont like the way the instructor has done this
@GRolla101 Its stress testing, the instructor is trying to piss them off and make them lose focus and taking masks off/purging a reg is a pretty good way of building stress, if there was an emergency then there is another cylinder with an octo for the buddy to breathe off and rectify the problem.

@chrisah1 Do you know if you have to do this skill in the pool and open water or just the pool? Thanks
