Thomas Mapfumo & the Blacks Unlimited from Zimbabwe. Probably recorded in 1988, but released in Zimbabwe in 1989.

With the one and only master of mbira guitar, Jonah Sithole.

Converted to digital from crispy Zimbabwean vinyl. The sound of TM's records in the west was always compromised in the mastering process, they never sounded quite the same...

Interview clip Thomas Mapfumo Sept., 6th, 1993. Photos Thomas & Jonah Sithole March 16th, 1996. Pics of Jonah in concert two days before.

  • love this stuff! can't speak a word of the language, but the music is mesmerizing! and i ADORE the totally different approach to the guitar here than is typically found in the West! wish his gov't let the guy go home, but i admire how he's stuck to his guns even though it cost him his home. hope i would do the same!

  • i remember the days I never listened to this type of music. I can now without shame say I absolutely love it, this is absolute class and talent. Ndatenda hangu VaMapfumo.

  • @mayor270272 i agree completely. we need more men like him that are willing to stand up and deliver! men (and women) who will not compromise their beliefs or their calling no matter what comes their way. by the way, who wouldn't happen to be able to get me a list of the guitarists he's worked with over the years, would you? I LOVE his sound, esp. his guitar work, and I'd love to be able to study up on who these geniuses were and get more familiar with their works, esp. Jonah Sithole

  • @jteshuwah - its true, his a true revolutionary, a man of of the people, voice of the voiceless- had to abandon all his property at home to continue fighting for the masses musically, l salute him
