Po Bronson argues that when it comes to raising children, we've mistaken good intentions for good ideas. Nurtureshock: New Thinking about Children, written with Ashley Merryman, describes why that many of modern society's methods for nurturing children arent working.

  • Finally ! As a teacher of 20 years, I can't tell you how frustrating it is that we are not allowed to make any negative comments and we are even discouraged from giving failing grades. We are barely allowed to reprimand children for bad behavior, irresonsibility ,etc. As a result, we have done them a great disservice.

  • Po Bronson makes sense!

  • as a single parent I truly nurture not to compensate..aware of the Alpha male and missing the two parent family..I talk with children and learn from them, I learn from them..open to learning more..interesting!~My mother a psychologist..helped me learn from failure, mistakes and ascent on the positive..

  • I like the idea of praising kids for their effort and not for their intelligence.

  • @SpockOfRock And even if Po is just in this for the book selling, if he has some good points I would still give them value because it's logical to take advantage of that, regardless of his ethics.

  • @SpockOfRock I saw a poptech video by Ashley Merryman and it was very well done! I haven't read their book, and noticed in her speech she was more of a collaborator in the sense that she took different studies by different people and put them all together, like a scientific mosaic. This could imply that she doesn't have any new ideas of her own, however, it has been shown that it is much more creative to take something old and make it new again, because there are more constraints on it.

  • This is Mike Riera's stuff?

  • Again, this guy "Po" and his friend "Ashley" have no skill... They write books because they have no skill to do anything else in life. "Po" is not a carpenter or an electrician or a scientist or a doctor or an architect or welder or small businessperson of any kind... "Po" is a book salesman. "Po" like to write nonsensical books and collect a paycheck for it. THAT is not a respectable skill in my opinion. "Po" can create NOTHIING! And you're taking his advice??? Think about it...

  • Wanna know how to be a good parent? I'll tell you all you need to know and I won't even sell you a book for it. Be warm and affectionate with your children. Let them fall asleep on your chest under a warm blanket while watching television. Ask them questions about the things they see and hear so that they learn how to LEARN and evaluate for themselves.Teach them science by letting them work on your old car with you or refinishing an old piece of furniture out in the garage. That's parenting.

  • It's not a parenting manual at all. All it does is state "This didn't work- and this did work"

  • I like this guy.
