An unforgettable classic from 1967, To Sir, With Love.

Starring: Sidney Poitier (Also starred in films like: A Raisin in the Sun, In The Heat of the Night among others.)

Overview:
Engineer Mark Thackeray arrives to teach a totally undisciplined class at an
East End school. Still hoping for a good engineering job, he's hopeful that he won't be there long. He starts implementing his own brand of classroom discipline: forcing the pupils to treat each other with respect. Inevitably he begins getting involved in the students' personal lives, and must avoid the advances of an amorous student while winning over the class tough. What will he decide when the engineering job comes through?

  • There are several reasons why this movie is a classic. However I will focus on only one: teaching as an art form and very human activity. Practically everyone teaches. The good teachers know that it is NOT what they teach that is important. Rather it is the indepth emotional connections or affective learning that occurs in their learners. For this to happen of course the teacher must experience similar learning as well. This last is also one of the joys of teaching - transforming lives.

  • I was 16 when I first saw this gem of a movie....I had all but forgotten how good it is....a classic for sure.

It's amazing, (and a bit sad), how much of the social comment and actions in this movie still ring true today...

    Thank you for uploading it...

  • @truvianni This state is really the last state to move forward with minorities being accepted. I am a white guy from Indiana,I am proud to consider myself "common folk,"if the Mexicans are being targeted, just like the blacks and many from the past, it affects me! I never forgot where I came from, that is just a "common family" just like the rest of the "ethnic people" people here in Arizona. The only difference, I'm white. I respect people that have deep roots here! I'm the guest!

  • @truvianni Well, it's very important to show the kids a positive minority role model because I am in Arizona. This state won the honor of being voted the 49th dumbest state in America and that is because most of the people, including me come from other states! Almost all off the law makers here are made up of outsiders with the Attorney General actually being from Canada. What the law makers have done here is organized and declared war on the Mexicans! Why it is still unclear?!

  • @1mparcher Interesting but why do you feel the need to point out that the school is full of minority students? I guess is so typical of Americans to do so though it is strange that in a country which is entirely made up of minorities and basically always has since it colonial day that such observations are still being made.

  • @hospitalship1 This is the best part of Poitier when LULU sing and give hims apresent,he was so emotional he change his mind and Stand by the new student's.Thank you I better go wash myhace with tear's.Mille Merci.

  • Thank you for posting this movie. I saw it as a child and I kept it like a treasure in my mind since then. This is one of the most beautiful movies ever made.

Great Actors like Sydney Poitier and the rest!

  • @cutis1000 Yes he did

  • i always loved this movie and i was born in 1966 :-). i watch this when i was a kid.

  • I am a substitute teacher at a high school that is full of minority students. I have been there for over a week and will be there for at least another week. Yesterday we decided that to be film day. I started showing this great movie and the kids are into it, big time! Sometimes it pays to be old, like me, because this is one of the greatest movies ever made, like you said! This should be considered in the top three influential movies ever!
