It has emerged that the Bush administration caught off-guard by the rise of Hamas, embarked on a secret plan to overthrow its democratically-elected government.

The magazine Vanity Fair reports in its April edition that President Bush and Condoleeza Rice, the US secretary of state, signed off on a plan for Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, to quash the Hamas authorities.

The plan involved Washington's allies in the region channeling arms and cash to Fatah fighters, who would rise up against Hamas.

But the plan backfired spectacularly, with Hamas apparently anticipating the move and taking over in Gaza.

How and why did Washington fail in its aims? What were its true motives, and where will its policy on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict head now?

Sami Zeidan of Inside Story investigates.

  • This is American history period. You can't just blame these things on Zionist Jews when much of the bad shit US has been doing for years (like Vietnam) has had nothing to do with Israel.

  • How can the American gov't claim to be "spreading democracy" while they attempt to topple the leaders of every democratic country that does not agree with them?

    Great comment.

The best thing you can do is to advocate within America to change their imperialistic designs.

And I'm glad, as an American, that you have become wise enough to search international news sources to learn that American media does NOT reflect accurately, the world view of US policy.

  • And America is not imperialist. /major eye roll

    Yeah, right.

Stop flucking up every one else's democracy just because they don't want USA interference.

  • everything is getting more complicated

  • God bless the Palestinians? Which god would that be exactly? The god of war?

  • Overlook the double post
