If you pay attention they do explain why some things are frozen and other things move. Anything that was "in motion" during the time will stand still. This explains the stick he hits the chair with and other things they were able to move.

This episode scared me silly and thrilled me to bits as a kid. I love the way the aliens rarely are seen and never speak. It's way more interesting and mysterious because the heroes have to deduce what the aliens are up to and theorise what they want. It's way better than the usual thing where an alien explains his plans for controlling the Universe.

The stool was suspended in mid air. He wacked the stool with a stick. The stick can be moved, but the stool cannot. A vague memory from four decades ago. Until now, I didn't know where it came from. There's more. Things that were moving are frozen. Things that were not moving are not frozen.I don't yet remember why. Anyway, thanks for helping me identify the sorce of the memory fragment.

Yeah, there are definite inconsistencies in the physics of the episode, but even so its one of the better ones. Too bad that the show didn't hit its stride until they were pretty much done for.
