I took this video of Richard sharing some of his memories about coaching gold medalist Jenny Thompson. . . . I met "Coach" in 2005. We had both attended Auburn University and years later we met at a nano-technology convention. Richard was experimenting with nano-technology patches with his swimmers at Stanford. We became friends and just last year he returned to Auburn to coach collegiate swimming again . . . Unfortunately, Richard died last June of brain cancer. Coach Quick will be remembered as one of the greatest coaches in the history of swimming. He won 13 NCAA titles with three schools during a career that spanned four decades. He also led the U.S. Olympic teams in 1988, 1996 and 2000 and was an assistant coach at the 1984, 1992 and 2004 Games. The Auburn men's swimming team won the championship in 2009 and Richard was named NCAA Coach of the Year for the sixth time. . . Richard will long be remembered. Not for his success as a coach but because of his humanity. He touched many people. His light burned bright and I was lucky to have known him.
He was one of the greatest swimming coach from the U.S. He coached Betsy
Mitchell, Jenny Thompson, Dara Torres, Summer Sanders, Misty Hyman among
others. Does anyone else know who Coach Quick coached? I am sure there are
many others, but these women were all World or Olympic Champions. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is why I think he is the greatest. RIP Richard Quick.
