Witness a chase of 323 through the mountains and villages of Northern Vermont. On a nice late fall day, with foliage still evident in most places, we catch a rare daylight movement of NECR's road freight (Brattleboro, VT to St. Albans, VT), and chase if from Northfield, VT to its termination at Italy Yard. There is even a foreign visitor in the locomotive consist. The chase and power is as follows:

323 - (Late due to crew availability) - 10/17/10

CEFX SD40-2 3771
CEFX SD40-2 3715
PW GP38-2 2007
NECR GP38 3845

Northfield - 10:37
Montpelier Jct. - 11:02
Middlesex - 11:10 (almost missed it!)
Bolton - 11:31
(Somewhere on Rt 117) - 11:48 (almost missed it!)
Colchester - 12:10
St. Albans - 13:35

Also note the 501 yard job, upon our arrival to St. Albans.

Once again, a special thanks to K. Burkholder and my parents. It was nice to get off campus and film some action.

  • Nice catch! By the way, does this line have a consistant schedule? I never catch anything when I'm in St. Albans

  • @davidd320

As of the past several months NECR typically runs their ROXB Sub. trains at night, although 323 may get into St. Albans as late as 08:30, which is just before Amtrak leaves. I don't know what times the CN typically runs, but I know it's typically not like the one in this video. I got extremely lucky to catch BOTH a daylight NECR and a late CN, especially meeting at the same time, that is rare. But the 501 yard job can be seen during the day. NECR also runs a chip train up that way.

  • Great Job on the video! I bet your parents drove quickly to catch up. How fast the locomotive were going?

  • @chefjavier

Train speed limit is 50 and we were doing 55...but when we were aside of the train they didn't ever seem to crest 45. Most of the time they were between 40-45.

  • Well done. It's a shame the clouds weren't more cooperative.

  • @FastFlyingVirginian

Thanks. Actually, if it was sunny I would have been shooting straight into the sun for 90% of these shots. There would have been bad backlighting for a northbound move at this time of day.

  • Great job, your parents did a good job too. Good composition and camera handling..

  • Great to see that MILW boxcar!

  • @KCIREDERF10

I know the P+W just sold there 3 geep 40's to a railroad some wereout that way,

also a sister to the 2007 is heading that way to be rebuilt.

    hope this help's.

also the P+W just picked up 3 ex BNSF widecab b40-08's that are on coal train service up here.

  • Wow, NECR is doing better speeds now I see. They aren't the only ones now though. Very nice video. I really enjoyed it.

  • 5 * for you, great video, and 5 * for your parents for the support!!!!!

  • @Theandymano- Also caught the video when I loged on this morning, Great Job!!! Its funny that you should mention that P+W is power starved, I live in the Southerntier of New York. Over the weekend I caught a NS mixed freight resting in Waverly NY with what appeared to be 2 P+W GP-38's in tow AWAY from Mass.!!!

  • Another great video - thank you for posting!

And thanks to your parents - they are obviously great people and they love you!

  • Loved it! Man, those boxcars were a-rockin' too.
