Keep your fifth life? No, it's the sixth life. It decreases the counter shortly after you die, beginning a countdown until regeneration. Or something like, I never played the game.

Skate's death at the end is probably the funniest thing I've ever seen in the LPs, ever.
I had to put the video back a good 30 seconds to hear what had been drowned out by the laughter.
