Novell Marketing Video for Linux playing on the popular Mac vs PC videos.
What is Linux? See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux
Some points for Linux off the top of my head:
- Free (as in speech). I have the freedom to tweak the system as I wish.
- DRM Free
- Superior method of software updates, installation
- Solid stability (servers I run have been up for 1+yrs, my desktop 1+ month)
- Can scale down to very old/obscure hardware (I have a Linux file server running an old 266, 24MB ram
- Virtually Spyware/Virus free
- Variety of system tools not available in Windows. Extensive programming interface.
- Very cool eye-candy ahead of other Operating systems. Youtube search "compiz", see the upcoming KDE, see the current version of Gnome.
- I know exactly what my computer is doing. Can't say the same thing with Windows, OS X
- Although I agree gaming is lacking, I personally don't game on PC but what I do see is the amazing benefit of being able to have access to the thousands of OSS packages out there.
- Luxury of using technology backed up by contributions and usage by companies such as IBM, HP, Sun, Google, many governments, military orgs, NASA, universities, super computer research. Outside the desktop Windows presence is not the greatest.
- Constant updates to all my software. You can choose to run cutting edge or run stable.
- Ability to decide what to install and what not to (can't say the same thing about XP)
- Freedom of not depending on one single vendor. I know my needs will not be put aside by the needs of a corporation anytime soon.
- Decades of solid tested UNIX (like) technology (see OS X benefits, not XP though)
- The ability take a part in the development process of the OS I use.
- Oh, did I mention it's free as in beer?

i think it's impossible to someone who's not crazy to use a Linux on a MAC, come on that makes no sense, everyboy who's inteligent knows that the Linux it's just a copy of the MAC OS. My god..

... "Linux it's just a copy of the MAC OS". ehh..no. You do know that Linux came before the version of MAC OS (OS X) that is based on a version of Unix right? And Unix came before both of them. Nobody is copying anyone. Although they have a similar base, they're different OSs.

question, just a question: linux is open source right? so doesn't that make you VERY vunerable to downloading a virus while you think you're downloading linux?

No. The complete opposite is true. Because Linux is open source, and usually available for free download under the various distributions, people rarely download it from non-official locations (ie. no need to pirate it and hope you are not downloading viruses). Official distributions (ubuntu, fedora, debian, etc) offer plenty of download options, which not only are fast, but also provide ways to verify that what you are downloading is in fact what you intended to download.

Hey, I am linux. I dont have native support for steam, battle.net, or mac app store games. I also have no support for adobe after effects, dreamweaver, fireworks, flash catalyst, flash, illustrator, indesign, OR photoshop. I also have no support for sony vegas OR final cut. I am great if you intend on not being able to do anything.

That is extremely misleading. You are not using the word "support" properly. Linux "supports" those programs as much as any other Operating System. It's just software. You can compile and execute instructions just like any other OS. The fact that vendors of those applications choose to not create a Linux version of their applications is a completely different story that has VERY little to do with what the OS "supports" and more about what makes business sense for their company.

Hah, got it wrong, yes this is 1 year later, but now Valve has released Steam for Linux, also I have the program "Wine" to run Windows Apps, WHO FRIGGIN CARES ABOUT MAC APPS, Apple sucks at making computers, stay with making phones and iPods, Apple! Linux has an "App" Store too, the games there are just as good.. No, BETTER then the ones in Mac Appstore, I'm on Linux right now! I'm doing practically EVERYTHING with no lag! Hah, make a comeback with that!

Someone should spoof the "Windows 7 was my idea" commercials. In Linux, if you have an idea, you really can implement it and benefit millions.

Me too. I just can't think of it as a mix of vulnerable crap (PC) and user lockdowns (Mac). It's like the babysitter of two ambitious 5-year-olds - "Yes, you do that very well. Now you go play, while I get things done." ;-)

Who needs that shit when you have so many thousands of Free (as in Freedom) Software options?
Just an idiot will use and pay for proprietary software that strips you out of your liberty and the solidarity of your community.

Trololol. Mac OSX is a Unix clone. Linux is a Unix clone. So, essentially, they are both copying the same OS, but both are written from scratch. OSX uses a different kernel (Mach) with BSD. Linux is just Linux -- it has no BSD code at all, even though it is very similar to BSD (BSD itself is also a Unix clone).

Vegas and Final Cut both have viable alternatives on Linux. Photoshop doesn't -- yet. However, GIMP will work fine for the 90% of the people who aren't doing uber-professional stuff. In other words if you are a home user, GIMP will do everything you need. People who say they "need" Photoshop at home are idiots.

i get the whole pc thing but came someone explain to me the difference between linux and mac? other than the obvious. in my mind it only really comes down to money and contracts. Macs just seem like a subsidised prettier version of linux to me that people make exclusive programs for money and pretty status for money. linux copies parts of macs prettiness and macs copy most of lunixs sheer awesomeness. if linux had anything to do with money they would just be macs right?
