Hah! I grew up in Jamaica (partially) in the late 70's and early 80's and for the longest time, my American references were rife with cheap, old TV shows. As it turned out, Jack Benny, The Honeymooners, Top Cat, and Dick Van Dyke were no longer 'a thing' once I moved to North America. And none of my peers had even heard of The Flying Nun.

So, I getchya. And I concede.

Sorry the Ted Baxter quote is in the Episode called "5/1" about Bin Laden.

But seriously, yes there are references in The Newsroom, which I (we?) don't get in England because it's an American-ism (like what's Charlie referring to when he says about Will becoming "Ted Baxter"?), but that doesn't stop me enjoying this series. In fact it's one of the first (of either American or English origin) in a long time where I'm getting the DVD of it as soon as it's out over here.

Hey, Nix, give me a break, We in England normally get all our American cultural references from The Simpsons! :o)

Well, fair enough. However, it's a movie which is well-known in the North American cultural lexicon, and it's relatively old. Complaining about ruining Rudy is similar to not wanting to know how Star Wars ends (just on a smaller scale because Rudy is nowhere near as internationally regarded).

I should also add, discussing this scene hardly ruins the movie. If you like the kind of movie Rudy is, it's eminently watchable and rewatchable. That was just one touching scene, albeit a famous one.
