This interview actually took place in 1981 when Cagney was a little over 80. If you watch the footage of James Cagney picking up his life time achievement award AFI in 1974 you'll notice he's slimmer and much more aware and active and obviously looks younger. I read that he was 10th in the AFI list of great actors... he should have made been placed much higher! What an incredible actor... The word legend is used to easily these days, but Cagney 100% deserves to be called a LEGEND!

Presumably, Cagney and O'Brien were asked by Paramount to do publicity for their roles in Foreman's production of "Ragtime". Cagney's appearance to receive the AFI Life Achievement Award in 74 was the highlight of the 40 year history of the tributes. As reflected in his autobiography, Cagney was approached to play Alfred Doolittle by George Cukor, director of "My Fair Lady" and he declined the project; he also was asked by Coppola to play Meyer Roth in "Godfather Part II", before his decline.
