This is an animation that describes how the Chinese Lunar Calendar came to have the 12 animals representing the years.

The story of the Chinese Zodiac begins with the Jade Emperor's idea to have a big race among the animals on the earth. The Jade Emperor told all the animals that if they won the first 12 spots, then they would be able to represent the years. During the race, the cat and the mouse rode the kind ox. While on the ox, the cat fell into the river and that's why cats chase mice/rats today. In the end, the 12 animals that first reached the finish line, they were granted the representation of the 12 lunar year cycle.

We enjoyed the great job that they did and thank them. :)
