IC&E GP9 #114 leads a northbound, East Moline to Cordova LNA2 local, through Rapids City, IL on the old Milwaukee Road "Nitrin Branch", also called the "Albany Line". This train operates six days per week; northbounds on Mon, Wed, Fri, and southbounds on Tue, Thu, Sat.
Date: 06/27/08.

Update, 2009: In the summer of 2008, BNSF tore up the remaining section of line that extended to Albany, and now ends in Cordova at MP 20.5; the line is no longer called the Albany Line (for obvious reasons), and is now referred to as the "Nitrin Sub." by CP Rail; and, the train's designation is now "B73".

Locomotive history: IC&E EMD GP9 #114; ex-I&M Rail Link #114; ex-SOO Line #2409, built in December, 1954.
Serial Number: 20019. Frame Number:
5366-10. Order Number: 5366.

Rolling Stock: three 29,200 Gallon Funnel Flow tank cars: Union Tank Car Company (UTLX) #667466, #667472, and Cargill Incorporated (CRGX) #29100.

History of the Nitrin Branch: The Nitrin Branch was Milwaukee Road's secondary mainline across the Mississippi River from its Chicago-Kansas City mainline. Once it had a route from Mount Carrol to a junction with Burlington Northern just south of Thomson, but then MILW used trackage rights on BN to get to the Nitrin Branch after the line's abandonment. Now under ownership of BNSF, the Nitrin Line serves the 3M factory between Albany and Cordova, and spurs serving the Exelon nuclear power station near Cordova. Trackage rights by MILW's successor IC&E are also used on the Nitrin Line. In and around Albany, it looks like the line through town is out of service, witness the overgrown weeds covering it, even though there are no immediate plans to abandon this portion. Just north of Albany and up to the BNSF connection near Thomson, the Nitrin Line is gone, and north of Fulton, a bike trail follows the former right of way.

  • That is great audio.

Those GP9s were built at least 50 years ago and are still running. That is amazing.

  • I love those Geeps

  • lol! The Geep 9s that the ICE owned had Soo Line origins, the paintscheme has been kept predominantly in its original Soo colors.
