44871 & 45407 WCME 30th Dec

The first outing on the mail line of Ian Rileys newly rebuilt Black 5 44871, teamed up with sister 45407, was on Wednesday 30th December 2009, only a few days after she was first steamed and moved under her own power. RTC/WCRC put on a classic trip from Manchester Victoria to Carlisle outward via the WCML and Shap, returning via the S&C. From what we observed on board she performed faultlessly which speaks volumes for the engineering skills in Ians team.

glad I wasn't at Ais Gill, would've been pissed off with steam blotting out the train, nice to see a crowd of brave folk at scout green though, must have missed it, great video Ralph, cheers.

@noelist Thanks Leon, yes the conditions were pretty rough, those on Ais Gill would have neede to be on the east side for a change.

The traffic was reasonably light when I went up the M6 but the wind was quite severe. And just before J39 the lanes narrowed from three to one so that may have been the cause of the tail backs, unless a high sided vehicle had been blown over.
