As King James made plans to re-write the bible in 1605, Guido Fawkes and the provincial English Catholics made plans (aka the Gunpowder plot of 1605) to blow up the houses of Parliament and prevent this "translation". Each year on November 5th - On the very night that the Gunpowder Plot was foiled (1605), bonfires are set alight and the event is commemorated with fireworks (and burning effigies of Guy Fawkes).

Whether Bonfire Night is a celebration of Fawkes' execution or to honor his attempt to do away with the government, is a matter of conjecture...
