  • I have seen Deputy Sheriff Steven Seagal using Aikido on the streets of our Parish here in Louisiana for over 20 years, against guns, knives, you name it, he has faced it daily as a law enforcement officer here, drunks, junkies, killers and ganbangers, he has handled them so easily you think you are watching a movie, he's that good..

he is a very great and gracious man and we thank him for serving our state and counties for over 2 decades.

  • i have never seen a Aikido video without a complete over exaggeration by the person being tripped

  • @pmull0011 With all that said, if I had a choice of learning ANY style, Aikido would probably be low on the list due to it not being as practical as many other arts.

Sorry for the barrage of replies.

  • @pmull0011 It isn't about someone letting you perform a technique on them. Each technique is situation specific.

I'm not an aikido advocate or anything but I DO know the art has some merit. And anyone that has dedicated their life to perfecting the techniques is going to be dangerous. That holds true for the vast majority of martial arts, some moreso than others.

  • @pmull0011 Actually I'm not off at all. But what you say is true too. It isn't a martial art that is going to keep you upright in 99% of fights and if you go to the ground... well, you're screwed. But everything I said about the guys going with the flow is true. And the old man, as long as he has practiced, would not be one to pick on. Granted he isn't as badass as this vid would have us believe but putting your hands on him would not be advisable.

  • @quazzie11 You couldn't be more off. It's a demonstration, so it's highly exaggerated, just like any other demonstration of any other discipline. Aikido has terrific principles with combining joint locks and throws but the majority of them won't hold any water without the other person letting you do them. Watch a real video of an Aikido artist in combat and you'll see how fluffed this one is when you actually have someone resisting.

  • @ThePmull001 It's easy to say that watching it on TV. That old guy would toss you, me and anyone else on this board around and make us look silly and barely break a sweat. If you've never studied Aikido then you can't really say what is or isn't "exaggerated". He doesn't really want to hurt those guys, so they have to flow WITH the joint manipulation. Otherwise several bones would be broken. It's one of the most difficult arts to master.

  • it all looks like roll play

  • i think that they have to throw themselves or else face the possibility of breaking bones or any other injury.

  • why they did not attack? they are just waiting to be thrown away..

  • I think I'd be more impressed if they ran at him and actually tried to attack him rather than just put their hands on his shoulders or wrists and then passively wait to get tossed somewhere.
