In August 1981 the inaugural phone call was made on Australia's first public mobile network built by Telstra, then Telecom, forever changing the way Australians connect. The 007 Network (also known as the PAMTS -- Public Automated Mobile Telephone System -- Network) launched in August 1981 in Melbourne followed by Sydney in December 1981 and eventually all capital cities by 1985.
This video is Australia's Network Ten news coverage of the launch of the 007 Network in Sydney in December 1981. The inaugural call was made in Sydney when Lord Mayor Doug Sutherland called Kevin Starr, Chairman of the San Francisco/Sydney Sister City Committee. The news segment references the cost of the phone and service as well.
The country's first mobile call was made when Telecom's Managing Director, Bill Pollock, was driving in Melbourne and called Telecom's Chief Commissioner, Tom May, in Sydney, officially launching the new service.
