Apparently a lot of people here didn't grow up around farmers....

This guy is far from retarded, he knows what he is talking about on the subject. He may not sound like a rocket scientist but he's a farmer and he's knows a lot about farming so give him a break.

I come from a farming family (although I'm an engineer) and I know that there is a lot to farming and it is by no means a simple profession.

Why in the world would it be wrong to allow direct sales to the consumer if it makes economic sense for a particular farmer? Perhaps this would require a larger or smaller operation that what you have but why not at least allow it? If it doesn't make sense for you then you are not being forced to do direct sales but at least let the free market determine if it is good for someone else. This would remove a government restraint on farm operation and there is already too much government in farming.
