Right on the coast of New Zealand's Southern Island is the Abel Tasman National Park. The park reaches right into the sea, so to speak. Particular to this area are the sea mammals, including the New Zealand fur seal.
Abel Tasman National Park is slowly regenerating its original forests. The park's ground is mostly granitic rock. And eroded granitic rock eventually creates golden beaches. In combination with crystal clear ocean water, this is a favourite spot for man and animals.
It is named after Abel Janszoon Tasman, who in 1642 became the first European explorer to sight New Zealand.
