2-11-10. pt. 3 of 6. Stossel discusses Nobel-winning economist F.A. Hayek's masterwork, "The Road to Serfdom." Written in 1944, but relevant today more than ever. This classic book warns of the dangers of a centrally-planned economy.
I wonder how many qualified firefighter applicants are turned away each hiring session? If you get all the applicants you want, and get them trained, then overpay them, there's something wrong. Overpay means to pay MORE than they will work for. Good economics says you pay what the worker(s) will work for, not more. A pay increase is usually a reward for for an individual's superior performance over what he/she was expected to do.
One reason I used like John Stossel was that he always played devil's advocate and didn't take sides as much; it lent a feeling of objectivity to his show. But now he says things like "We didn't cut firefighters in half; it's like you're robbing our future", it's just going to turn away the people who need to hear this the most.
I still love Stossel, though. Maybe not as much as before.
Statistics are meaningless. The economics of the public sector and unions is irrefutable. Just look at what happened to Vallejo, Ca as they mentioned. Doesn't matter how long it took the town to go brankrupt, it showed very clearly that following such a fiscal policy will in fact bankrupt a town. It's not a matter of if but rather just when.
