Two monitors can be a configuration nightmare (I hope future realeases of (K)Ubuntu will tackle this... I eventually had to cave in and sacrifice my left orientation for a "TwinView" setup, but boy was it worth it. The EyeCandy in KDE/Kubuntu is absolutely stunning! Don't let this deter you though if you have one monitor and/or monitors normally oriented, because the setup is usually less demanding. (K)Ubuntu is getting easier and easier to use and its a great open source alternative to other Os's. (For the curious I'm using an Nvidia 9800 GT graphics card, on an Intel Core Duo Quad Core).

  • i love linux but i use gnome. i use dto love KDE 3.5 .. after KDE 4 came out .. i kissed KDE a goodbye and went with gnome .. i use linuxmint.

  • I used to hate KDE until Kubuntu; every distro presents it differently , and whomever I used last time had it configured so that it was extremely buggy. Kubuntu however works pretty much flawlessly on my system... this could be a configuration/hardware coincidence or they are getting better... Either way, Gnome wasn't doing what I wanted... As for linuxmint I've been wanting to try it out.

  • Gnome on linuxmint is awesome. gnome on ubuntu is ugly. they configured it differently on linuxmint. but yeah kubuntu is nice. but in my honest opinion. i find kde 4.xx to be really slow compared to gnome. im not saying KDE 4 doesnt look nice. it looks great. but a bit too slow on my rig (AMD x2 @ 6000) and the whole desktop being a big widget on kde 4. xx turn me away from it. :) i might try KDE 4.5 when it comes out. till then ill stick with gnome on linuxmint :)

  • Yeah, I hate the widgets. Its pretty minimal when you start Kubuntu, its just one for Twitter (Which impressed me since I'm a Twitter Addict) and you can add more. Linux Mint looks really nice and the fact its an Ubuntu variant is even better. One day when I have plenty of time and a computer I'm not afraid to hurt I want to try Gentoo. That day will never come, but it'd be neat to build your linux from the ground up and have more control over it.

If you want to take Gentoo for a testdrive, I can suggest Sabayon Linux.

They offer a Live CD as many distros do, but when you install it, it automatically configures heaps of stuff.

I haven't tried the latest version, but a couple versions back it automatically configured my 8800GT gfx card and Compiz Fusion.

Installing/maintaining software was a time consumer back then, but that may have been improved in the meantime.
