Pvt. Flemon J. Wyatt - Enlisted with Co. I, 10th Texas Infantry, at Kimball, Bosque County, Texas, on March 10, 1862. He was was killed in action at Franklin, Tennessee, on November 30, 1864. He was buried in an unknown grave in McGavock Confederate Cemetery, of that city. Flemon was my 3rd great grandfather. I thank you so much for this "touch of his history." Yes, I have a copy of a picture taken of a grave and on the top left there is a very clear image of a Confederate soldier in grey uniform looking down on everyone . Has been tested and is not a fake .
Yes a truly inspiring place . My wife and I were taken there by Ronny Mangrum on our tour of the Battle of Franklin last year on a visit from Scotland I love TN , what lovely people , of course , with Scots blood in them .
i just finished the book Confederate Widow about Carrie McGavock and what she had to do to get this cemetary started...awesome story but also very sad....i grew up in gettysburg so the civil war was always a part of my life
The Battle of Franklin absolutely breaks your heart!!! Such valiant men giving their all in over 5 hours of assaults against an almost impregnable position upon the orders of a demented Gen. John Bell Hood! What a testament to the honor and unflinching courage of Southern manhood!
The 13th Tenn, Inf. Regt. (my G-Grandfather's unit) was there led Gen. George Washington Gordon. I went to the Memohis grammar school named after him. My Great Grand Uncle was also there w/ Forrest's Cavalry.
How did your paper go? Did you do it yet? I have a couple books on the Battle of Franklin, I can give you the authors names and titles if your interested in them. Also we have tons of pictures we have taken , I can email you a few if your interested in some pictures to go with your paper.
I haven't finished the paper yet. It's not due until the end of April. I have quite a few books on it, but I'd be happy with anymore possible titles of books (may already have them, but it won't hurt). I wanted to get down there at the end of March, but wasn't able to. I will get there. I would love to see some of the pictures that you have taken if you don't mind. Thank you for offering to let me use them in my paper. If I do use them, I will make sure that I give proper credit. You are kind.
This place in middle Tennessee is so full of history! Go, tour the McGavock home "Carnton Plantation" see the only privately owned Confederate Cemetery, where Carrie McGavock removed the bodies of the dead Confederate soldiers to her home and private cemetery. This place is run by the DCV ( Daughters of Confederate Veterans) and walk the hallowed grounds, listen to the stories, of the 2,000 men who died in battle in 5 short hours on that day Nov. 30, 1864. Take the tour , hear it all !
